SRO unveil new-look British F3 2014 calendar

Series returns to British foundations with addition of Thruxton and just one overseas round

Roberto La Rocca

SRO Motorsports Group has today announced the exciting provisional 2014 calendar for the new-look Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series.

Returning to a format that will take in six of the best circuits in the United Kingdom, British F3 will also make a single overseas trip as part of the support race package at the prestigious Total 24 Hours of Spa. And in another boost to the series, British F3 will predominantly share headline billing at five of the 2014 rounds.

To maintain stability, the format of the weekend will remain as three 30-minute races, the second race grid being a reverse of the first race finishers from the position selected at random by the race one victor.

Starting off at Corby’s Rockingham Motor Speedway in early May, teams will then head to the heart of the UK’s motorsport industry with a visit to Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix, three weeks afterwards.

A month later the top British single-seater series move to the East of England for a visit to the Snetterton 300 circuit in Norfolk. The July calendar date takes in the Spa-Francorchamps visit with the Blancpain Endurance Series, one of the most sought after support race opportunities in motorsport, and a position the leading single-seater series has held since 2010.

Drivers, teams and fans alike will be pleased to see the return of the super-fast Hampshire track, Thruxton at a yet to be confirmed date. The Thruxton round will be without British GT and will be the first time the series has raced at the 2.356 mile circuit since the 2010 season when the now Torro Rosso F1 driver, Jean Eric Vergne and James Calado, a new addition to the Formula One paddock with Force India, shared the wins.

The final two rounds see visits to two former British Grand Prix venues, the picturesque Brands Hatch GP Circuit in Kent, and the GP loop configuration of the Derbyshire circuit, Donington Park.

Stephane Ratel, Founder and CEO, SRO Motorsports Group Ltd: "The new look British F3 series requires a committed and consistent approach with stability key for building it a lasting future, that is something SRO is fully committed to. This calendar has been created in consultation with the teams and FOTA and we believe it is an exciting prospect for new and existing drivers and teams, and the addition of Thruxton to the calendar after several years is something we know will help attract new entries into British F3. It is important for British F3 to grow-up and find it’s place in this new era of motorsport. This calendar and the details we announced in Spa in July are the correct course of action to allow it to mature and not just preserve its existing heritage, but add new champions and create more history."
