Mustonen's first F3 pole position
Clutch problems spoil any chance of a win in the first race
Räikkönen Robertson Racing team's (Double R) F3 driver Atte Mustonen finished eigth in the second race of the Snetterton round of the British F3 series on Sunday. Expectations were especially high after Mustonen's performance in Saturday's qualifying sessions, in which he managed to secure himself pole position for the first race. However a win eluded Atte as his car's clutch fried before he had even left the grid. At the end of a drama filled race, Atte came home in last place.
The sun baked down on Snetterton this weekend and both races were held on a hot, dry track. Atte's performance in qualifying attracted much attention, and before long the other teams and pit crews had dubbed him The Flying Finn. Expectations were high and there was an air of optimism in the Mustonen camp. For Sunday's first race Atte started from pole position, with Carlin Motorsport's Niall Breen second on the grid and Double R's Jonathan Kennard third. However, Atte's race went wrong before he had even left the grid, as his clutch broke before the off. Atte could do nothing but follow the other drivers around the track in last place. The first three drivers home were all from the Carlin Motorsport stable; first was Niall Breen, second was Sam Bird and third was Alberto Valerio.
For Sunday's second race, Hitech Racing's Marko Asmer was on pole, Carlin Motorsport's Sam Bird started from second on the grid, his team-mate Alberto Valerio from third and Atte from fourth. Atte started poorly and dropped one place straight away. Atte's tactics were simple, stay with the top three come what may. However the tactic backfired as Atte ran wide whilst trying to overtake, dropping him another two places down the order. Eventually Atte finished eigth. The three fastest qualifiers were the first three home; Asmer was first, with Valerio second and Bird third.
"Now we are so quick that it's only a matter of time before we win our first race. It'll mean taking a few risks, and we saw what that can lead to in today's second race. The clutch problems were something else, but that's motorsport!" said Atte of the dramatic weekend.
