Piquet Picks up First F3 Victory of 2004 at Snetterton
Nelson Piquet Jr took his first victory of the season in the Avon Tyres British Formula Three Championship at Snetterton in Norfolk this afternoon (June 5).
The result puts the Brazilian back into the leads of the championship by four points, with two more races to go over the course of the weekend.
The first race of the weekend was to replace the rained off second Silverstone event and Piquet took the lead from third on the grid, passing Australian Will Power into the first corner. From that point on he pulled out a lead over Adam Carroll, who made a superb start from 6th on the grid.
A safety car period was not enough to put Piquet off his rhythm and as the green flag was waved he immediately set about rebuilding his lead. Carroll was unable to respond to the Brazilian as he had to defend from Lucas Di Grassi and Danilo Dirani. Dirani held third for the early part of the race but a move round the outside at the Esses by Di Grassi gave him the final podium place.
"Now we are going to start to win a lot more races from this point in the season," said Piquet. "I had to be careful in the early stages of the race and not make any mistakes, but I led from the beginning and stayed in front and that is how I want to continue," he added.
Danny Watts picked up fifth place in the Lola-Dome after battling throughout the race with Alvaro Parente.
The Scholarship Class victory once again went to Ryan Lewis. Adam Khan took second place after Stephen Jelley retired and Barton Mawer struck problems mid-way through the race. He eventually finished third.
