James Rossiter claimed his first pole position in the British Formula 3 Championship with a very strong performance in qualifying for found three. His fastest time was nearly three tenths ahead of Danilo Dirani in second who led a queue of fifteen cars that were covered by under one second. Nelson Piquet, the championship leader after two rounds, lines up in third place.

Fairuz Fauzy was the early leader with his fastest lap of the session, ultimately good enough for eleventh, before he was knocked off the top by Adam Carroll's fastest lap. Lucas di Grassi also had a brief spell at the top before the times started to tumble.

Will Power and Dirani came out and started lowering their times over series of laps. Power quickly went down to 1m 15.673s but Dirani soon bettered this with a 1m 15.573s. Piquet and Rossiter meanwhile were putting in slow laps and their built up to runs at full qualifying pace.

Piquet set his fastest lap straight away to go second but he was unable to improve on his 1m 15.606s lap despite six further attempts. Rossiter was also on the pace and quickly split Dirani and Piquet with a 1m 15.599s lap and did two further near-identical laps before managing to pull out a 1m 15.300s lap to take provisional pole.

Rossiter had set his fastest lap midway through the session and no-one was able to get near his time during the remaining fifteen minutes. All the leading drivers soon returned to the pits to end their sessions early as those lower down the field tried to improve on their times, with only Will Davison being successful to move up to sixth.
