Piccione shows grit to take podium.
Clivio Piccione put in a gritty drive to take a brilliant podium finish in the latest round of the British Formula 3 Scholarship Class at Rockingham Motor Speedway circuit, Corby.
The Monegasque teenager's outstanding performance was not compromised even whilst suffering from a faulty gearshift during the race. Clivio charged through the pack into third place and took a new lap record on the challenging 2.5-mile circuit.
Piccione had qualified fourth in class for the race in his T-Sport Dallara-Mugen Honda. He dropped one position at the start, recovering quickly to fourth once again due to an incident ahead of him.
Clivio then hunted down Canadian driver Billy Asaro and pulled off a great maneuver passing him on the fifth lap into the Deene hairpin moving into third place on the road, and a well-deserved podium finish at the chequered flag.
"I made the gap and dived to the inside of him keeping my line until I was out in front. I was getting a good run through the chicane all the time, and that was why I was able to pass him because I had great speed on the exit.
"I was struggling a bit because my flatshift was broken from the start - it was difficult to change gears and at the end it was very hard. I'm still pleased with the result and the points.
"Qualifying is the key. Although I got fastest lap I could not get further than third. I spent a little of my qualifying session getting used to the circuit as this was my first time at Rockingham. We soon had a good set up on the car and we caught up in the race, so I'm pleased with that."
Piccione took eighth in the earlier race after being hit into a spin by another driver.
