Clivio Piccione completed an outstanding rookie season in the British Formula 3 Scholarship Class by clinching second place in the championship in the final round at Donington Park this weekend.
The Monegasque teenager took second in the first of the two races in his T-Sport Dallara-Mugen Honda, and was third in race two after being punted out of the runner-up spot by an errant rival.
Clivio started the first race from third on the grid but quickly moved onto the tail of the lead racer. On lap 10 of 16 the scholarship class leader found a way around the A-class car of Fabio Carbone, who had broken his front wing and was holding up a train of cars. Unfortunately, Clivio could not find a way around Carbone, as other A-class runners were mixed up in the battle, and thought best to forsake any unnecessary risks to take valuable championship points. Clivio had a good end-of-race fight with an opposing driver to take a well-earned second place.
"I couldn't get past Carbone," said Piccione. "I didn't want to take any risks, because it was important for me to get points for second in the championship. Asaro caught me and made a move, but I defended my line."
In race two, Piccione started from fourth on the grid but soon rose to third. When the race leader lost the lead in an incident with an A-class car, Clivio moved up to second. With just one lap to go, the recovering Dahlgren punted Piccione into a spin at the Goddard hairpin. Although Clivio quickly recovered, he was out-accelerated on momentum by his team-mate, and was narrowly beaten to second place.
"Dahlgren had no chance to pass and was on top of me before we even reached
the corner!" said an incredulous Piccione. "That meant Karun could do a move on me at Redgate."
"I've taken second in the championship! I'm really pleased with this result during my first season in F3. I've improved a lot and had a good year with T-Sport. The competition was good this year and now I have good experience I'm looking forward to the 2003 British Formula 3 season."
