CONWAY MASTERS PAU TO TAKE F3 CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
Pau, France-5 June 2006: Mike Conway has shot to the top of the British Formula 3 championship table with two imposing wins on Pau's beguiling street circuit in rounds five and six of the International Series.
In the second race held on Monday afternoon, a 30-second lead over the rest of the Championship class testified the calibre of the Sevenoaks driver. He pegged the fastest lap of the race in the process.
It completed a formidable two rounds from the Raikkonen Robertson Racing competitor, who seized the full quota of points with his precise, confident handling of the cut-throat French city course.
"It's been great to race here and come away with the lead in the Championship. I love street circuits and Pau is sensational-it's very demanding on a driver and it's a wonderful feeling when you get it right," he enthused. "The team -- particularly James, Wes and Craig -- worked hard on my car all weekend so we're very pleased with the results. And I'd like to thank the people of Pau for letting us disturb their streets over the long weekend!"
Conway next races at Silverstone this weekend, as a substitute driver in the GP2 series with DPR Direxiv.
"My management thought it would be beneficial for me to compete in the GP2 race at Silverstone and secured me the drive," he said. "I'm very happy to be doing it with DPR Direxiv -- I had a half-day test in the wet with them last year at Paul Ricard and it'll be excellent to team up with them again."
Conway, a BRDC Rising Star, added that he was looking forward to participating in the Formula 1 support races at the home of the British Grand Prix.
"I really enjoy the Silverstone GP circuit; it's a bonus to be racing a GP2 car there for the first time. It'll be challenging and I'm approaching it as a great experience."
