Two Podiums in Pau

After having raced in the Historic Grand Prix last weekend, now I came back to Pau this weekend for rounds five and six of the British Formula3 championship.

Free practice started very well for me, as I managed to set the second fastest time in both sessions. I was very happy with the car my team Carlin Motorsport gave me and I really enjoyed racing at over 200 Kph on the narrow street circuit of Pau.

In first qualifying we were very quick from the start of the session, unfortunately on my fastest lap I made a small mistake which ended in the tire wall. Still my best Lap until that point was good enough for third place on the grid for race one. For qualifying two my mechanics did a great job to repair my car and ensure it was perfectly competitive again. I rewarded the team with a front row starting position for the second race.

I started well in the first race holding my third place comfortably. When on lap seven the second placed driver crashed I then moved up to take his position. From then it was a relatively controlled race as I had a guest driver between myself and the third placed driver. Unfortunately the guest driver then went on to do a very disappointing manoeuvre, driving into the back of my car and pushing me into a spin. Due to this I lost my second place and had to settle for third.

In race two I had a very strong start, however in turn one, one of my competitors managed to pass me. From then on I was lying third, just behind the second placed driver trying to put as much pressure as possible on him. I was a lot quicker, but because of the tight nature of the track overtaking was close to impossible. Knowing these 12 points would be worth a lot in the championship fight, I was happy to take my second podium of the weekend.

I want to thank my team and my race engineer Matt Callaghan for giving me such a great car this weekend and I now feel very confident for the upcoming races. The Championship fight is now very wide open, as I have managed to defend my third place and get closer to the leader.
