Speedy Gonzalez dominates on F3 debut

Rodolfo Gonzalez dominated both races at thrilling Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire on his Formula 3 debut on Bank Holiday Monday driving for Brackley based T-Sport team.

The weekend was an unusual one for the competitors, taking part in qualifying for the races on the Saturday before having Easter Sunday as a rest day before roaring back into action on Monday morning for the opening rounds of the British Formula 3 International Series.

Competing in the 'National' Class, the 19 year-old Venezuelan driver started the weekend well, securing pole position for Round 1 by 1.1 seconds from his nearest rival before crushing them by a huge 1.5 seconds in qualifying for Round 2.

Monday morning dawned dry, cool and overcast. The lights went out for the start of Round 1, immediately adding some excitement to the day! Rodolfo maintained his National class lead from pole position, challenging the higher powered Championship class runners in front of him.

Rodolfo maintained his National class lead throughout the race and fought hard with Championship class driver Charles Hollings for 11th position overall. Despite a number of Safety Car periods and restarts, Rodolfo held his nerve and position, crossing the line 11th, 0.3 secs in front of Hollings, securing the fastest lap of the race in his class.

Confident after his success in Round 1, Rodolfo again made a good start and spent the early part of the race challenging the championship class runners. As things settled down, Rodolfo got into a rhythm and focused on maintaining his position, putting in fastest lap after fastest lap in the national class. By the end of the race, Rodolfo was up to 8th position overall and had comfortably dominated the national class race, setting a new lap record for a national class car.

After the podium celebrations, Rodolfo commented:

"I could not have dreamed of a better start to the season, two pole positions, two wins, two fastest laps and a new lap record! It is fantastic. I have to say a big Thank-you to all the team at T-Sport as the guys have all worked really hard since the start of testing, they are doing a great job. I would also like to Thank my sponsors, PDV, PDVSA, Gobierno de Miranda, CVG, Producto, Renault Venezuela, Inatur the Best of Two Worlds and The New Eccles Hall School."
