HOLLINGS IN THE POINTS TABLE AFTER BRITISH F3 OPENER AT OULTON PARK
Charlie Hollings, having completed only 25 laps of testing in his Mercedes-Benz powered Dallara, walked away with two championship points after the first weekend of racing in the 2006 Lloyds TSB Insurance British F3 International Series which took place at Oulton Park in Cheshire.
The Easter Bank Holiday and glorious spring weather drew a huge crowd for the season opener -- and the racing did not disappoint. Charlie, driving for Daventry-based Fortec Motorsport, finished in eleventh place (twelfth overall) in the first race of the day, coming from fifteenth position on the grid. During the second race, Charlie climbed from sixteenth position in the starting line-up to ninth place (tenth overall) and won two points in the process.
Despite taking four places, the first race was relatively uneventful for Charlie as there were three safety car periods. However, in race two, the 23 year old pushed from the start and jumped seven places to ninth position by the end of the second lap; Charlie held this position as the race settled down and finished a few seconds behind his team mate Yelmer Buurman.
"Having signed with the team two weeks ago, this Easter weekend was all about getting to grips with the car," said the Yorshireman "and there is no better way than in race conditions."
"Considering the short time-scale, the team did a great job and we managed to iron out the few teething troubles we had during the first race. It was great to finish the first two races with a few points under our belts but we are now focused on the next rounds in May. We will be testing at Croft next week so we should be in great shape for the challenge at Donington."
Both of the races held at Oulton Park this weekend were won by Bruno Senna, nephew of the three-time Formula One world champion Ayrton Senna. Rounds three and four of the 2006 Lloyds TSB Insurance British F3 International Series take place at Donington Park in Leicestershire on the 20 -21 May 2006.
