ABAY CHARGES BACK THROUGH THE PACK

With a mid-field starting position for the weekend's second race of the British Formula 3 Championship at Monza, Oxia Carlin driver Sam Abay had his work cut out.

From 12th on the grid, Abay jockeyed for position in the mid-pack from the start-line, before being caught in a first corner incident involving several cars. Despite avoiding any damage, the youngster emerged at the tail of the field in 27th place. A safety car to clear the incident offered some consolation, allowing Abay to bunch back up to the main pack during the caution period.

When racing resumed, the Australian staged a gallant fight back through the field, picking off competitors one by one, and regaining an impressive 14 positions during the remaining 12 laps, to cross the finish line in 13th place. Two post race penalties would later move Abay up to 11th in the classification.

"We didn't qualify well for this weekend's second race. When that happens you run the risk of getting caught in someone else's accident at the start.

Unfortunately that's what happened and put us to the back of the field.

Never the less we'll take away the positives, such as a promising race pace and look forward to next weekend's event at Rockingham." said Abay.
