Tyre problems slow me
After the successful first three rounds we were very confident of a good result heading to Mondello Park in Ireland for rounds seven and eight of British Formula 3.
The weekend got off to a good start as I was able to set the second fastest time during the three hour test session held on Friday. This made us very confident for qualifying, which is very important on this tight and twisty track.
In qualifying 1 the track was wet, which forced us to go out on rain tyres. The track was slowly drying as lap times where subsequently quicker with every lap completed. Unfortunately at the driest point I hit traffic and my fastest lap was therefore completed when it had already started to rain again. The result was P6.
Second qualifying was held on a drying track using slick tyres. On my first set of new tyres I managed to set the fastest time at that point. However unfortunately on my second set I was not able to improve my time and I therefore got pushed down the order to 8th place. As we later found out in race two, there was a problem on this second set of tyres.
In race 1 I got a decent start off the line pulling alongside my team-mate Christian Bakkerud and passing him around the outside in turn one. From then on, my race was fairly calm, as there was a little gap to fourth place and I had a comfortable gap to sixth place. Therefore I settled for fifth place and a solid point's finish.
Straight from the start of race two I felt there was a problem with my tyres as I was struggling for grip and got a lot of wheel spin. Throughout the race I was pushing very hard, but I soon realised there just wasn't any grip in my tyres. I finished a disappointing race for me in 8th place.
What exactly caused our tyre problems is being analysed by my team, who I believe are not at fault for these problems. There are still positives to take away from this weekend, as we have once again proven to be very fast under normal circumstances. We will be looking to make amends next time out at Snetterton.
