Charlie Kimball qualified in pole position for race one at Castle Combe circuit in Wilshire. The American driver put in a strong series of laps and eventually set a 59.100s time to go fastest to line up at the front of Sunday morning's race. Kimball, driving for Carlin Motorsport, quickly moved up to fourth in the opening laps of the session but worked hard during a fast stint and improved his fastest lap four times to eventually go fastest of all.
The session was red-flagged after twenty minutes due to two separate incidents around the circuit. Nick Jones spun at the exit of Camp Corner, a notorious high-speed right-hander at the end of the lap, hitting the tyre barrier hard and damaging the car. Soon afterwards Christian Bakkerud hit the tyres at the exit of Tower, a fast right-hander two-thirds of the way around the lap, and was collected by Steven Kane who has having an incident of his own. All three drivers were okay after their incidents but the cars of Jones and Kane were badly damaged.
Dan Clarke continued his strong form from the practice session earlier in the day to set the second fastest time in this session. He ran second initially and set four laps all within a tenth of a second of each other but was unable to improve. The Raikkonen Robertson driver then backed off briefly before attacking again and set his fastest time of 59.215 seconds just before the red flag came out. Alvaro Parente initially went fastest with a 59.328 second lap on only his fourth lap of the session and this lap was quick enough to ultimately take third position.
The Championship Class was headed by Salvador Duran, currently second in the championship, who qualified his P-1 Racing Dallara Mugen-Honda less than four hundredths of a second ahead of Promatecme UK driver Charlie Hollings. Championship leader Barton Mawer could only manage the fifth fastest time.
