The Dolphin Shopping Centre was at the hub of British Motorsport on Thursday 26 June when it played host to Hitech Racing's British Formula 3 International car and Brookspeed Team Trimite's Avon Tyres British GT Dodge Viper. With over half a million pounds of racing equipment on display drivers from both teams also paid a visit to Poole before the cars and stars made their way to the nearby circuit of Thruxton, Hampshire, for the next championship rounds on 28 & 29 June.
Thousands of shoppers were delighted to have the chance to take an unrestricted look at the horse-power on display while meeting motor racing champions of the future from the British Formula 3 International Series and Avon Tyres British GT Championship. The youngest ever British Formula 3 driver, Max Chilton (Reigate), visited the Dolphin Shopping Centre for the first time, to challenge shoppers on the Scalextric and meet his Poole fans.
Max, who last month at Monza became the youngest ever pole-sitter in the UK's premier single-seater championship, commented: "This has been a fantastic day at the Dolphin Shopping Centre where it has been nice to get out and meet the fans, especially in the town where my brother, BTCC star Tom, lives. This is the first time that I have attended a Pit Shop Roadshow and it's a really good opportunity to meet the public and take motorsport to the masses. I'd like to thank the Dolphin Shopping Centre for inviting me today."
Current Avon Tyres British GT Championship leaders, Southampton's Brookspeed Team Trimite, had its Dodge Viper Competition Coupe positioned pride of place on the Main Mall, next to the Hitech Racing Dallara F308 Mercedes HWA. Brookspeed head to Thruxton with local driver Jon Barnes (Southampton) and James Gornall (Peterborough) hoping to extend their 16 point lead.
Dolphin Shopping Centre visitors went head-to-head with the drivers in the Scalextric Time Attack where James Gornall set the target time for the public to beat and the ten fastest challengers were each rewarded with a pair of tickets for Thruxton. James said: "It's been great to challenge shoppers on the Scalextric Digital Super GT set. We look forward to seeing the competition winners at Thruxton and I hope they will be cheering us on to take our third victory of the season."
Jon Barnes added: "It's always brilliant to get out and meet the fans. I hope that many of the people we have met today will make the trip to support us at Thruxton. We know the Dodge Viper will run well there and it will be our last opportunity to take advantage of a sweeping fast circuit where we hope to take two point-scoring finishes."
As the winner of the Scalextric Time Attack, Adam Bullen from Poole will be heading to Thruxton with a money-can't-buy VIP hospitality package courtesy of Avon Tyres. Joining Adam will be Stuart Beddingfield, also from Poole, who won the Dolphin Shopping Centre's free prize draw, which includes exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of the Hitech Racing and Brookspeed Team Trimite pit garages. Twelve lucky winners will also be on their way to watch the tyre-screeching action this weekend thanks to on-the-spot prize giveaways with Wave 105's Steve Power, which caused much excitement throughout the centre.
Jerry Stampfer, Dolphin Shopping Centre Manager, commented: "This has been a fabulous day with the cars bringing a touch of glamour to the centre at the same time as introducing some up and coming drivers. Last year Hitech Racing's Marco Asmer visited the centre and went on to win the British Formula 3 International Series, so I hope similar luck rubs off on the drivers who have visited us today. The Pit Shop Roadshow has delivered a fun and interactive event and I wish the teams all the best of luck at Thruxton."
