Rafael Sperafico qualified on the pole at today's final qualifying session for Sunday's Barber Dodge Pro Series Race at the Molson Indy Toronto. Sperafico, who sits second in the championship, grabbed the pole on his final lap with a time of 1:11.555. A.J. Allmendinger took second with a 1:11.595 and Memo Rojas grabbed third with a 1:11.720.
The session started slowly with no drivers improving on their Friday times until about 9 minutes in when Aurelio Lopez, Jr. finally improved. From that point, drivers slowly improved their times with Sperafico finally taking the top spot, being the first driver to get into the one minute 11s. The session really livened up in the last few moments, when the pole changed hands 4 times between Sperafico, Rojas and Allmendinger.
Sperafico admitted making a couple of errors on his fastest lap. "I missed my braking point at turn 3," he said, "and I touched the wall near the last corner. However, they didn't hurt my time too much."
Allmendinger, who was guaranteed a front row starting position with his fastest time in the first qualifying session, was one of the last drivers to improve on his Friday time. He admitted taking it easy at the beginning of the session. "I was saving my tires the first half and I knew the fast time would be set at the end," he said. "The car was handling great and I really pushed hard the last 6 minutes." Allmendinger leads the championship by a comfortable margin -- 80 points to Sperafico's 47 points.
Motorsport.com driver Davy Cook only completed 4 laps in the session, failing to improve on his Friday time. He will start from the 10th position and sits 4th in the championship, 2 points ahead of Rojas, 2 points behind Marc Breuers, and 6 points behind Sperafico.
