Davy Cook takes 2nd at Sebring

(Sebring, Florida) March 18th, 2002 - Davy Cook, 19 of Tallahassee, Florida finished second in round 1 of the 2002 Barber Dodge Pro Series at Sebring International Raceway, having led six of the 19-lap race.

Under new CART rules, Davy Cook's fastest lap in qualifying was good for 2nd overall but gridded him 3rd for the race because he was not one of the two drivers that stood at the top of the list in either qualifying sessions. That did not phase the young American as he got a great launch on the start to charge up the inside of polesitter A.J. Allmendinger to take the lead into turn-1. They were able to open up a ten-car length lead over 3rd place on the first lap, and extended it throughout the race. Three more lead changes were in the making as on the second lap, Allmendinger used the draft to make a side by side run through turn-1, which placed him on the inside heading down to turn-3 where he made the pass stick. With Cook a few car lengths behind heading into turn-13 on lap-4, he was able to capitalize on a small mistake by Allmendinger to retake the lead. Cook held the lead until lap-9 where the two leaders exchanged the lead in turn-3 and maintained the positions for the remainder of the race. Cook went on to finish 2nd with 16 points banked towards the championship.

"It was a long week starting on Tuesday that allowed Team Sliderule to dial in the car for qualifying and the race," explains Cook. "It turned out to be good that I started 3rd as I timed the start just right and took the lead immediately. It was very exciting to jump out on top early! A.J. and I worked well together to pull away from the field, which made it a two-car battle for the lead the entire race. All of our passes were very clean, which gives us lots of confidence for running together in the future."

Cook will go for his first win in round 2 of ten which be hosted at Lime Rock Park on May 27th. Last year Cook garnered the pole position there in round 4.
