ELKHART LAKE, WI -- Aug 18, 2002: Canadian racer Josh Beaulieu scored an impressive podium finish in the Barber Dodge Pro Series race held at Road America. The 16-lap event was round nine of ten in Beaulieu's rookie season in the series.
Starting in 5th, Beaulieu slipped by Rafael Sperafico at the start, before dropping back several positions in the early laps. Beaulieu's pace around the 4-mile circuit soon picked up, and he had moved back up to 4th by the full-course caution on lap 11. On the restart, Beaulieu passed fellow Canadian Dan Di Leo and began to put pressure on points leader A.J. Allmendinger. Allmendinger forced Beaulieu on the escape road in turn 5 with two laps to go, and the two held station until the chequered flag, finishing behind race winner Leonardo Maia.
"I'm definitely pleased to finish 3rd today, even though you are always looking to win," said Beaulieu afterward. "The battles that were going on were unbelievable close. We were running with a low-wing setup, and the track was quite slippery today so the opening laps were really dicey. The California Club Reynard-Dodge really started to work well at about lap 6, and I was able to make a number of passes. A.J. was driving incredibly aggressive and was difficult to pass, but I pushed as hard as I could all the way until the chequered flag.
"I am really looking forward to racing at the Molson Indy Montreal this coming weekend. We had a good run there last year in Canadian Formula Ford, so I have got the slight advantage of knowing the track quite well. I feel pretty confident of our chances to end the season on another high note."
The final round of the 2002 Barber Dodge Pro Series will be this weekend at le Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, with live timing for the qualifying and race at www.barberdodge.com.
