ACDELCO LATE MODEL TOUR
(Western Racing League)
May 22, 2001 (Calgary) - Bill Royce, the President and founder of the Western Racing League, announced today that the touring series of the stock car racing sanctioning body will now be known as the ACDELCO Late Model Tour.
"We're delighted that the ACDELCO line of auto parts has decided to become involved with our series," Royce said. "ACDELCO has a long and successful history in this sport and they are exactly the kind of company we wanted to work with." Royce referred to this, the first year of ACDELCO's involvement, as 'a building year' and says he looks forward to a long and mutually beneficial arrangement between the Western Racing League and ACDELCO.
The ACDELCO Late Model Tour offers late model stock car racers the chance to compete against their peers at the premier oval tracks in Western Canada and regularly posts the highest number of entrants of any stock car racing series in the region. Based on the late models which race as part of the regular program at local speedways, ACDELCO Tour races are longer - usually 100 laps or more - and offer a purse in excess of $10,000.
Beginning in 1997, the series has seen races won by drivers from Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia but the championship has always been won by racers from Saskatoon. Charlie Kirton was the first series champion, while Trent Seidel has earned the laurels for the last three years in a row.
This season's schedule consists of five events. The opening race takes place at Race City Motorsport Park in Calgary on May 26. The next event will be at a new venue - Sun Valley Motor Speedway in Vernon, BC on June 16. Bridge City Speedway in Saskatoon is the next stop on July 28 and another Saskatchewan track - King's Park Speedway in Regina - hosts the ACDELCO Late Models on August 25. The Tour will close out where it began on September 22 - at Race City in Calgary.
