EDMONTON, AB (March 30, 2001) - The Ford and Lincoln Dealers of Western Canada have come together to put one of the country's top stock car racers behind the wheel of a Ford Taurus in 2001. Starting this May, three-time CASCAR West champion Wade Lee will race under Ford Quality Care and Fast Lane Service banners, in a Taurus operated out of the Apollo Motorsports stable of reigning western champ Kevin Dowler. The effort will be 100% backed by Ford's network of dealers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, as well as the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
It will mark the full-time return to racing for Lee, who has run a limited CASCAR schedule in the last two seasons. The Calgarian has been one of the most prominent competitors on the western Canadian racing scene for well over a decade and will compete in every CASCAR Super Series event held west of Ontario this season. In addition to the full Super Series West tour, Lee's schedule will also include the CASCAR National Series races at the Vancouver Indy (on Labour Day) and Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park. Ford of Canada's Regional Customer Service Manager David Sanson, who is based in Edmonton, said, "I'd like to congratulate all of the Ford and Lincoln dealers in Western Canada for teaming up with Apollo Motorsports and Wade Lee to bring their winning Quality Care Service and Fast Lane spirit to the racetracks of Western Canada. We're all very excited about this. It's our belief that this is going to elevate the western Super Series to a new level."
Wade Lee is similarly excited to be flying the Ford Quality Care Service and Fast Lane colours, as a member of Dowler's Apollo Motorsports team. "This is a great opportunity for me. I owe a lot of thanks to the Ford Dealers of Western Canada and to Kevin [Dowler]. Kevin and I have a long history of racing against each other and there's a high level of respect in our relationship. And to have the Western Canadian Ford and Lincoln dealers support me in this way means a lot, too."
Lee's Quality Care Service Taurus team will operate out of his existing race shop in Calgary.
"I can't tell you how happy I am to have Wade carrying the torch for Apollo Motorsports in Western Canada," said Dowler, the 2000 Super Series West champion, who will be competing in the CASCAR Super Series National tour this season. "I'm sure Wade will be receiving the Western championship trophy - that I now have - at the CASCAR banquet this fall."
"This is a very exciting time for Apollo Motorsports," said Dowler. "My own cars will be running out of the former race shop of well known DIRT racer Joe Plazek, in Caistor Centre, Ontario. For 2001, all of Apollo Motorsports' cars will be made in Waterloo [ON] by Peiper Racing Chassis (PRC); a very respected builder. They will, of course, be powered by engines from Automotive Machine Services (AMS) in Edmonton. To be in a position to campaign a second Quality Care Service Taurus team - with strong support from the Ford and Lincoln Dealers of Western Canada- is a major accomplishment for Apollo Motorsports. That it will be driven by my good friend Wade Lee, who is unquestionably one of the country's top stock car racers, makes it a perfect situation."
