DINWIDDIE, Va. - Defending IHRA Pro Funny Car World Champion Scott Weney has secured a one-race deal for the IHRA Summit Drag Racing Series ACDelco Nationals presented by Chevrolet. Weney, 41, of Royersford, Pa., will carry the livery of Maple Grove Raceway in nearby Reading, Pa. The intent of the associate sponsorship is to promote the upcoming NHRA Keystone Nationals in September.

While Weney realizes that promoting an NHRA race at an IHRA/Summit Drag Racing event might seem in poor taste, he feels that what he is doing will help the sport of drag racing in general. He also points out that he cannot afford to turn away any type of sponsorship.

"We want to help the sport grow," explains Weney, who took over the controls of the Pro Funny Car of Jackie and Judy Gibson for the 2001 tour. "I have always enjoyed a great relationship with George Case, who runs the track. The goal of this sponsorship is to promote ticket sales."

Weney points out that this is not an NHRA and IHRA battle, but rather a friend helping out a friend.

"George has been helpful in sponsorship leads, which have panned out," confided Weney. "I usually talk to him several times a week and this program just worked out. I hope everyone will receive this deal in the spirit for which it was intended; a friend helping another friend."

After winning the 2000 IHRA.com Pro Funny Car championship, Weney's car owner Ken Sheetz decided to park his racing operation. The mustachioed, second-generation drag racer landed a last minute deal with the Gibsons and it has already paid off with a quarter-final finish at the recently completed Holley Spring Nationals in Rockingham, NC.
