Watkins Glen, NY (April 1, 2002) - Officials at Watkins Glen International announced today that March of Dimes, Genesee Valley/Finger Lakes Division, will receive a portion of the proceeds from the track's Opening Day on May 5. Back by popular demand, fans of The Glen can once again drive the same historic road course like four-time Glen winner Jeff Gordon.
"We are excited to include March of Dimes in an event that has been rapidly growing since its inception four years ago," said track President Craig Rust. "March of Dimes is a wonderful organization to partner with and there is the strong possibility of additional opportunities developing down the road." March of Dimes volunteers will be on hand to assist WGI with Opening Day activities.
Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes provides funding for cutting-edge research and innovative programs that have saved millions of babies from birth defects, low birthweight and death. Significant medical breakthroughs such as Surfactant, Neonatal Intensive Care Units and newborn screening were made possible through funds provided by the March of Dimes. Continuing to invest in our community, the March of Dimes awarded nearly $340,000 last year in research grants and education programs to help unlock the secrets behind birth defects to give all local babies a fighting chance to survive.
"The March of Dimes is honored to be the official non-profit organization for the Watkins Glen International Opening Day," said Kathleen Herring, Director for the Genesee Valley/Finger Lakes Division of the March of Dimes. "For over 64 years the March of Dimes has led the race to improve the health of America's babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality, and now Watkins Glen International will help us close the gap to give every baby a healthy start in life."
Fans wanting to drive the track can purchase three controlled laps for just $15. And, for fans that don't feel like driving, rides in an Official Pace Car will be offered as well. Opening Day is also the deadline for purchasing tickets at the special advance sale price for all events.
Tickets for the 2002 season, including the NASCAR Winston Cup at The Glen during the weekend of August 8-11, are now available.
