Pepsi-Cola To Present Regular Dirt Motorsports Program This Sunday August 5 At Utica-Rome Speedway

VERNON, NY -- Pepsi-Cola, the official soft drink supplier of Utica-Rome Speedway, will present thrilling DIRT Motorsports sanctioned stock car racing this Sunday August 5 at the popular half-mile track in Vernon. In race competition on Pepsi-Cola night will be the mighty DIRT 358-Modifieds plus the DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots. Race time at the 40-year old historic track is set for 6pm.

Todd Burley of Spencerport leads all competitors in the headline DIRT 358-Modified division with a ninety-five point lead and four victories as of July 22 in the competitive class as he races for his first career track title. Four-time track champion Paul Jensen of Edmeston currently is second in points, but has not visited victory lane since 1998. The legendary Jack Johnson of Duanesburg has three victories to date, but rides only third in track points. J.J. Michaels of Baldwinsville is fourth in points, and recently ended a slump since his opening night victory with his second win of the season. Ryan Baye of Constantia is fifth in track points and still hungry for his first career feature triumph.

Completing the top ten in points to date are Jason Barney, Gus Schmidt, one time winner John Ramsey, Steve Hulsizer, and defending track champion Ron Holmes, who is winless this year. Any of the above drivers, including other top threats such as John Barker, Mitch Gibbs, Jim Rothwell, Wayne Reutimann Jr., Andy Romano, and Ted Lamb could wind up in victory lane after the Pepsi-Cola 30-lap feature event this Sunday. You also never know when invaders such as Alan Johnson, Kenny Tremont, or maybe even Ronnie Johnson will show up to try to steal the glory from the track regulars.

Rounding out the Pepsi-Cola regular program this Sunday will be the intensely competitive DIRT Sportsman division as well as the classy DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots. Drivers will be racing for every point they can, as the month of August is the final full month of racing to determine the seasonal track champions and points leaders. Points for the DIRT 358-Modifieds will end on August 27, while points for all other divisions will end on September 2.

You can be a part of all the family fun and excitement this summer at the ultra-fast Utica-Rome Speedway, a popular Sunday tradition in the Mohawk Valley that produces some of the most-thrilling three and four wide racing on the entire DIRT Motorsports circuit. On average, over 110 cars show up weekly for the action packed five division show, which is normally completed before 10pm to allow everyone time to go home and prepare for the week ahead.

The track is located just east of the village of Vernon on Route 5 and is easily accessible from New York State Thruway Exit 33. Free parking and overnight camping is allowed on speedway grounds.

The gates this Sunday August 5 at Utica-Rome Speedway on Pepsi-Cola night will open at 4pm, with racing taking the green from Starter Dick Sweet at 6pm. For more information, contact the speedway office at (315) 829-4557 or log onto the official website at www.newuticaromespeedway.com.
