FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Feb. 12, 2001) - Sports fans in the Fort Worth-Dallas television market contributed to the largest increase in year-to-year ratings for this past Sunday's Budweiser Shootout aired for the first time by Fox Sports.
The Metroplex led the increased viewership of the special event for NASCAR Winston Cup pole winners from 2000 held at Daytona International Speedway. The local ratings for the event were 4.4 compared to a rating of 1.8 for the 2000 event. The 144 percent increase in the ratings was the highest of the nation's ten largest television markets.
Seven of the ten largest markets showed increased ratings compared to 2000. Other major markets with increased ratings included New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Detroit and Atlanta. The overnight national rating for the Budweiser Shootout was 4.2 with a 10 share. The overnight rating was 17 percent higher than the 2000 race.
"The increased ratings for the Budweiser Shootout in this area indicates the intense interest in NASCAR racing," said Texas Motor Speedway General Manager Eddie Gossage. "The race coverage by Fox Sports was excellent and we are looking forward to Fox televising our Harrah's 500 weekend events."
The overnight ratings represented 49 major markets around the country. The national ratings for the Budweiser Shootout will be available on Thursday. A show's rating indicates the percentage of U.S. homes tuned in to it and a share represents the percentage of television sets tuned in.
