STRATFORD, ON: The 22 Racing Team are pleased to announce that Thermo King have joined the team as an associate sponsor for 2001. Steckly in the #22 AW Millwrights/Erb Group Pontiac Grand Prix had high hopes for a strong finish in St. Eustache as Thermo King are located in the Montreal area. Their hopes were dashed early in the race when a spin in oil resulted in a twenty-second place finish. The Auto Parts Plus 150 was the seventh event on the Castrol Super Series tour and the 22 Racing Team had hoped to turn around their run of misfortune of the past few weeks here but it was not to be.
Steckly, who picked up his new motor the night before leaving Ontario for this event, noticed the horsepower difference early in practice. He felt that if they could get the car hooked up to run the tight 4/10-mile track they would be in good shape for a top finish. Motor problems have plagued the 22 team for the past three events so a change in engine specialists has taken place. The results were evident in time trials as Steckly posted the fourth quickest time with a team best 18.244 at this track.
The challenge early in the Auto Parts Plus 150 would be to get down to the inside as running the high lane is not the groove of choice here. After two laps Steckly found a hole, dropped down and settled into a strong early race pace. The #64 NTN Bearings car of Mark Dilley experienced rear end housing problems and unknown to the other racers had dropped gear oil all over turn three and four. Steckly and D. J. Kennington got into the oil and both hit the wall hard. While the rear of the Kennington car was banged up, Steckly was not so fortunate as the front right side of his car was damaged beyond repair and he was forced to park it for the night. A disappointed Steckly said after the race "I hate it for AW and Erb as they have been behind me 100% and Erb even had people here tonight from Montreal. This car was great and we were able to run up front with the top three until we got into the oil. I guess on a positive note though we posted the fastest lap of the race." Podium finishers included 1. #1 Peter Gibbons 2. #17 D. J. Kennington 3. #4 Don Thomson Jr.
New associate Thermo King has joined the team as a sponsor in 2001 through the efforts of Wendell Erb and the Erb Group of Companies. Thermo King Corporation was founded in 1938 and manufactures transport temperature control equipment for a variety of mobile applications. The company operates 13 manufacturing facilities and 17 parts distribution centres worldwide. Erb Group offer time sensitive, temperature controlled transport services through the use of Thermo King equipment.
The next event for the 22 Racing Team is the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres on August 3rd and 4th in Trois-Rivieres, PQ.
