BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 31, 2000 . . . Eddie Mumford won the first T.H.Properties Freedom 76 Modified Classic (1971) and Duane Howard won the last. In between Billy Pauch has won five, Fred Rahmer has been to victory lane twice, Duane Howard has done it three times. Top dirt track modified talents such as Kenny Brightbill, Craig VonDohren, Doug Hoffman, Tom Mayberry, Smokey Warren, Glenn Fitzcharles, Chip Slocum, Donny Erb and others have won the Classic just once. Many of the top names in dirt track modified racing will be at Grandview Speedway on Saturday, September 9, in search of the $20,000 plus, being offered to the winner. Racing will get the green flag at 7 p.m. Many of the past winners will be in the field looking to claim another prestigious victory in the race that is considered a classic, the Grand-daddy of major dirt track modified events. More than 90 racers were on hand last September and just as many, if not more, are expected for the 30th annual edition of the T.H. Properties Freedom 76. In addition Cheer's Tavern will sponsor the Cash Dash featuring all qualifying heat winners with the winner taking home $1000. The winner of the Freedom 76 will also take home a custom championship ring, a jacket and, most likely, a large chunk of lap money and 6-foot tall trophies. For the winner it could very well be the biggest payday of his career. And for the kids there will be activities starting at 3 p.m. with face painting, clowns, fingerprinting and a moon bounce. Adults and children will enjoy disc jockey music, autograph sessions and interviews with some of the top talents entered in the event. The Stacy Miller Charity Auction will also be part of the pre-race activities. The auction is to raise money for a young race fan who has been declared legally blind as a result of a 4th of July accident. A mortar shell (firecracker) was set off causing considerable damage to Stacy's face and brain. She has no insurance coverage. Ernie Saxton, track announcer, will preside over the auction. High bidders will be able to become a judge for the annual U.S. Tobacco MS. Motorsports Beauty Pageant in January. A Steve Grissom TracPhone Winston Cup driving uniform will go to a high bidder (at least $600). An Andy Belmont ARCA America OnLine driving uniform will be auctioned as will an Ernie Irvan autograph photo plaque, a number of fenders and hoods from NASCAR and ARCA race cars, original editions of Open Wheel and Stock Car Racing Magazine, a Karcher Pressure Washer and so many other great items. All funds raised through the auction will go to the Stacy Miller Fund. There will be dozens of auto racing items (some great photos of racing greats) plus a few non-racing items to be auctioned off for this worthy cause. Coming up on Saturday, September 16th will be open competition racing for the modifieds, late models and PA sportsman stock cars with a 5:30 p.m. starting time. In fact the same show is also scheduled for Saturday, September 23. Consideration is being given to the possibility of running another Thunder on the Hill Series, 4-25 features program, in October.
