Sachs North America, a division of Mannesmann, is responsible for the sales, marketing, and distribution of Sachs, Borg & Beck, Boge, Stabilus, and Mintex branded products to the automotive aftermarket in the United States and Canada. A longtime partner of the Skip Barber organization, Sachs North America provides the Barber Dodge Pro Series with a world-class racing clutch designed to support the demands of the Dodge 3.5-liter engine and the Hewland 6-speed sequential gearbox. With 19,000 employees worldwide, the Columbus, Ohio based company generates over $2.3 billion in sales annually.
The partnership has been a good one for both Skip Barber and Sachs North America.
"The benefits of our relationship with the Barber Dodge Pro Series, as well as the Skip Barber Racing Schools, include our ability to introduce premier performance products for racing. We also have a marketing advantage in having the SACHS name in U.S. motor sports," says Jerry Thomas, Public Relations and Event Manager for Sachs North America. He continues, "Throughout the company's long history, we have been at the forefront of international racing series, including Formula One, World Rally and others. Globally, the company officially sponsors 25 world-class racing teams, with new ventures on the horizon for 2001."
While the company focus is on the automotive sector, Thomas notes that feedback received from the racing community has been overwhelmingly positive.
"While the Barber Dodge Pro Series creates visual support to our traditional customers through motor sports marketing, Sachs is also able to deliver superior performance advantages to many of its racing partners," says Thomas. "As we increase our participation in U.S. motor sports, the engineering expertise of Sachs Race Engineering (of Germany) is becoming synonymous with premier teams in a variety of racing series, including NASCAR and CART," he adds.
New and unforeseen opportunities have come from the relationship.
"Sachs was instrumental in bringing in sponsorship from Mintex brake pads," says Steve Sewell, Director of Operations for the Skip Barber Racing School. "That's business-to-business value we hadn't anticipated."
Mintex, a division of BBA Friction, supplies OEM brake pads to many of the world's automakers. The M1166 brake pads used by the Barber Dodge Pro Series provide the stopping power necessary for the demands of racing on road courses and ovals.
