Indianapolis, Ind.-Indianapolis' east-side speedway has named Torry Stiles to replace veteran Al Stilley as News Director and editor of the weekly Pitboard. Stiles' Speedrome career began in 1976 as a fan in the stands and preparing street cars for the weekly stock car shows. His father John Stiles Sr. purchased the track in 1977 and managed it through the 1996 season. Checkered Flag Enterprises, headed by long-time racers Jake, Bill and Joel Cohen, took over management in 1997. In his 26 seasons Torry has been involved in virtually ever aspect of track management and in recent years has served as the track's electronic signboard operator and back-up Public Address announcer. He also spent three years as a mechanic for drivers Jim Wampler and Ed "Country" Brown. In the off-season he attended Park-Tudor School and Boston University. He is married and has two children. Al Stilley takes over as editor of Indianapolis' "Southside Times" a well-respected weekly newspaper covering southern suburban Indy. Stilley's racing career dates back to the late "60's covering eastern Kentucky racing and basketball. He gained national prominence as PR director for the American Speed Association and columnist for Stock Car Racing magazine and other publications. "Taking over from Al is one of the greatest challenges of my life", says Stiles. "Al's experience and professionalism were always a vital part of the Speedrome and will be dearly missed. I'll do my best to follow his example." The Speedrome racing season begins Sunday, March 4th with an afternoon practice session for all classes and the kick-off of the Carmel Sod Spring Fling series for the Roadrunner and Outlaw Stock Figure-8 cars.
