Martinsville, VA (September 29, 2000)--- Martinsville Speedway has hired Mike Smith of Martinsville, VA as its Director of Public Relations. Smith will leave his post as sports editor at the Martinsville Bulletin and join the staff of Martinsville Speedway in mid-October. His duties at Martinsville Speedway will include writing, working on the speedway’s web site www.martinsvillespeedway.com, and promoting Martinsville Speedway events. Smith will be working with Steve Sheppard, senior director of corporate communications, and Dick Thompson, vice president of corporate communications in the promotion of Martinsville Speedway. “We are proud to make Mike a part of our team,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “I have known Mike for many years, and I know, with his abilities, he will be a great asset to Martinsville Speedway.” Smith has covered the events at Martinsville Speedway for many years. "Going to work for Martinsville Speedway is like going home for me. I've worked with Clay Campbell and his grandfather Mr. Earles for so long, everyone at the speedway is truly like family to me,” Smith said. “I began covering Martinsville Speedway 23 years ago and I learned early on the folks there are some of the finest you'll ever meet. I truly feel honored to join them. "Mr. Earles was one of the pioneers of the sport and Clay Campbell has carried his grandfather's dream into the 21st century. Martinsville Speedway has always set a standard that everyone else followed in auto racing, and I feel privileged to be able to join such a respected operation,” he said. Smith graduated from Madison College, in 1975, with a B.S. in Communication Arts with emphasis in journalism. He worked at the Martinsville Bulletin as a sports writer from 1977-79, was sports editor at the Franklin News-Post in 1979-80, was public relations director at Franklin County Speedway, Natural Bridge Speedway and the Salem Raiders (minor league hockey team) from 1980-82. He returned to the Martinsville Bulletin as a sports writer in 1982 and became the sports editor in 1986. Smith has been the recipient of 11 Virginia Press Association writing awards, including five first place awards for column writing. Smith’s community activities have included being chairman of the Martinsville-Henry County Wall of Fame committee for five years with the Martinsville Henry County Chamber of Commerce and served as public relations chair for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in 1999 and 2000. Smith said his hobbies are canoeing, fishing, camping and golf. Smith and his wife, Anne, live in Martinsville. He has one daughter, Megan, who is a graduate student at Lynchburg College and two stepchildren Todd and Julie.
