SELINSGROVE, Pa. - After a strong finish to the 2001 season and on the heels of numerous off season facility improvements, Selinsgrove Speedway is ready to make an even stronger impression in 2002. Track officials announced this weekend that Middleswarth Potato Chips has signed on to be the title sponsor of the Susquehanna Valley 410 Sprint Car Series featuring four major motorsports events at the Snyder County oval in 2002. "This company has always been involved in racing," says Middleswarth General Manager Jeff Goff. "We own the sprint cars driven by Keith Kauffman and Todd Hestor and we've always been supporters but more importantly we have always liked Selinsgrove Speedway." The high-profile series of events will kick off on Sunday, April 28 when the 410 Sprint Cars will compete in the inaugural running of the Jan Opperman Memorial. A California transplant with an admitted hippie image, Opperman recorded 19 feature wins at the track and Selinsgrove Speedway holds the distinction of being the only place trendsetter Opperman ever recorded a championship during his illustrious albeit shortened career. Wheeling the famed Bogar No. 99, Opperman picked up the track title in 1973 while establishing the region and Selinsgrove Speedway as the nation's hotbed for Sprint Car racing. In 1997, Opperman succumbed to a lengthy battle with debilitating injuries incurred in a tragic racing accident in 1981. Raindated for June 2, the Opperman Memorial will be part of a blockbuster weekend at the venerable oval, making up the second consecutive night of action on the weekend. The speedway will host Pack The Track Night II, featuring free general admission, on Saturday, April 27. Middleswarth Chips and the Susquehanna Valley 410 Sprint Series return to the speedway for the 12th annual version of Central Pennsylvania Speedweek on July 7 and then the series swings back into action on Monday, September 2 for the return of the Labor Day Classic. The series climaxes on Saturday, September 16 when Middleswarth Chips is an associate sponsor of the 20th Anniversary Alexander Family Dealerships Sprint Car Open, which carries a September 17 raindate. "I really admire the effort that the promoters are taking at Selinsgrove," says Goff of recent efforts to revitalize the track on every front. New guardrail, catch fence, lighting and clay are just a few of the steps that have been taken by promoters Charlie Paige and Earl Zechman. "You're taking the bull by the horns and making something happen and that's why we're getting involved," says Goff. "Basically it comes down to the fact that Selinsgrove is going in the right direction and we are very excited and happy to be able to play a part. It's all about local support. It's that simple!"
