It took the most successful Grand Prix driver of all time to pip Rockingham Motor Speedway to the post at today's Autocar Magazine Awards in London. Michael Schumacher fought off a strong challenge by Britain's newest international motoring racing venue to lift the prestigious 'Motorsports' trophy.

There were four nominees in the Motorsport category. Four times World Champion Michael Schumacher, the BMW Williams F1 team, the Bentley Le Mans team and Rockingham Motor Speedway. Rockingham received a commendation by the panel of expert judges, with Autocar editor Rob Aherne saying, "In twelve short months Rockingham has been for turned from a building site into one of Britain's most exciting sporting venues." The German driving ace was awarded the trophy in recognition of his dominant performance this season for Ferrari, which saw him break many long-standing Formula One championship records.

"It is a privilege to have been beaten to the chequered flag by Michael Schumacher," said Rockingham's Chief Executive David Grace. "It's a huge honour just to receive the nomination at the prestigious Autocar awards and is a mark of the standing of Rockingham Motor Speedway within the whole of the motor industry, both here in the UK and in Europe."

The award ceremony, held in The Marquee in Battersea, concluded with the announcement of the European Car of the Year. This award is the most eagerly awaited in the motor industry, with the highly acclaimed Peugeot 307 taking centre stage as the 2002 European Car of the Year.
