NHRA, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, can attribute much of its impressive growth over the last half-century to the loyal sponsor commitment from R.J. Reynolds' Winston brand. Today, their partnership stands as a model of success and perseverance in American motorsports. R.J. Reynolds has supported NHRA drag racing through its Winston brand since 1975. That support has grown consistently over the years, surpassing $1 million in 1988 and $2 million in 1995. Winston's total payout to competitors in 2001 will be more than $2.3 million, quite an increase over the $100,000 point fund in 1975.

NHRA professional drivers compete for the $1,045,000 Winston point fund. That total includes the following bonuses for the five champions of the Winston Drag Racing Series: $200,000 to the Winston champions in Top Fuel and Funny Car; $125,000 to the Winston Pro Stock champion; and $30,000 to the Winston Pro Stock Motorcycle and Pro Stock Truck champions. Drivers in the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories who finish in the top 10 in the 2000 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series point standings will receive bonuses ranging from $40,000 for finishing second, to $12,000 for finishing 10th. In addition, Winston provides season-long bonuses totaling $1,150,000 paid to drivers who are in the Winston top 10 of their respective categories entering each national event. The top 10 drivers in Top Fuel and Funny Car receive $2,000 each, while the top 10 drivers in Pro Stock receive $1,000 each. Another $2,500 is paid at each of the 14 races that include the Pro Stock Motorcycle category.

In addition, Winston continues to support the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series by maintaining professional relationships with all NHRA track owners, offering generous support to each facility on the NHRA Winston Drag Racing
