LEESBURG, VA - The World's quickest Pro Modified will be sporting associate sponsorship from Prolong Super Lubricants during the 2000 season. Team owner Johnny Rocca, whose 1949 Mercury recorded an astounding 6.227 elapsed time last September in Budds Creek, Md., continues a marketing partnership that has been in place since he debuted the radical "lead sled" back in 1997.
"We are pleased to have Prolong Super Lubricants aboard once again," explained Rocca, who will once again serve as crewchief on the team. "They serve as an important piece to the championship puzzle. We are going to make a furious charge for the 2000 championship."
Rocca has already gotten off to a good start in his quest for the championship. Driver Troy Critchley piloted Rocca's flamed and fender-skirted entry to phenomenal testing results in during the latter part of 1999. The former Australian Top Doorslammer titlist made a clean sweep at both events of the famed Winter Series by obliterating the competition at the Citrus Nationals in West Palm Beach, Fla., as well as the Snowbirds in Bradenton, Fla.
However, as impressive as his clean sweep was, none could rival the victory during last season's Mopar Performance Parts Pro Modified Shootout. The special "race-within-a-race" was contested during the Mopar Parts World Finals in Shreveport, La. and featured the best eight Pro Modified racers with IHRA competition. The team was not to be denied as they fended off all challengers and secured $20,000 for their efforts.
Rocca's next major event will be the second annual, CompetitionPlus.Com Groundhog Warm-up presented by Majesty Homes, during the weekend of February 18 - 20, 2000 in Darlington, SC. This event stands as one of the largest preseason events for professional full-bodied race vehicles.
Rocca is a partner in the ownership of Darlington International Dragway and uses the facility frequently to test his combination. During last season's event, the team hammered out the quickest and fastest Pro Modified lap.
The IHRA national tour begins on the weekend of March 9-11, 2000 with the Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals. The International Hot Rod Association, of Norwalk, Ohio, will present 11 national events in 2000, including 10 in the United States, plus another in Canada. Each event will receive prominent and primetime national television exposure through Sunday night airings on popular cable entity The Nashville Network (TNN). Nashville, Tenn.-based TNN, owned by CBS Cable, boasts an audience in excess of 50- million viewers
