Joe Sack, Jr. named Berlin's Director of Racing Operations.

MARNE, MI - Berlin Raceway President Scott Lane announced today the hiring of Joe Sack, Jr. as Director of Racing Operations.

Sack will oversee all operational aspects of Berlin Raceway, including the racing program. His job description includes everything from opening the gates to working with the concessions and ticket departments to selling advertising. Sack will work closely with Race Director Bob Marz but will report directly to Lane, who will remain closely involved on a daily basis with the Berlin Raceway operation.

Sack, a native of Grand Rapids, grew up attending races at Berlin Raceway and most recently worked as a sales engineer at Hill Machinery in Grand Rapids for nearly five years. He attended Ferris State University and Grand Rapids Community College, majoring in business marketing and management.

Lane said Sack possesses several qualities that were important to the newly-created Director of Racing Operations position, including a solid knowledge of the sport of racing, sales and marketing skills, communications skills and management skills.

"The hiring of a Director of Racing Operations is a logical next step for our organization," Lane said. "Having someone with a solid racing background to run our day-to-day operation not only provides a solid foundation for the future growth of Berlin Raceway but it also allows me to devote more of my time to my duties as President of Whitecaps Baseball. I strongly believe that Joe is the right addition to our staff at this time."

Sack said this job - the business of racing - has been something he's been working toward since early childhood.

"When I was in second grade, my dad took me down to AutoRama at the Civic Auditorium and I saw Richard Petty's #43 car...that was it for me," Sack said. "I knew racing would always be a big part of my life. The business side of racing, as opposed to being a driver, was what got me excited whether it be interactions with sponsors or what it takes to run a track. I've taken every opportunity to visit tracks, get behind the scenes and ask questions in order to learn about the business of racing.

"When the Whitecaps purchased Berlin Raceway, I was thrilled," he continued. "I realized the longevity of this historic track was safe in their hands because of the credibility they bring to sports venues. I envision building on the solid foundation we have at Berlin to enhance the fan-friendly atmosphere and hospitality, and also to take what's already a very viable competitive racing program and establish an even greater parity among the competitors."

Sack will join the organization on January 27. The 53rd season of racing at Berlin Raceway opens Saturday, April 26 and runs through September 27.
