Irwindale, Calif. (Tuesday, September 19) - - Irwindale Speedway was honored this morning before the regular meeting of the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County for its participation in the annual "Spark of Love" holiday toy drive. Speedway Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and the track's Director of Communications, Doug Stokes accepted scrolls on behalf of the facility.
The Speedway was presented with a large hand-illuminated scroll, signed by all five Supervisors and which read, in part: "Whereas ... Irwindale Speedway Volunteered To Host The 'Christmas In July' Summer Toy Drive At Its Weekly Saturday Night Racing Events ... Therefore Be It Resolved That The Board Of Supervisors Of The County Of Los Angeles Hereby Commends And Thanks Irwindale Speedway ... In Making This Toy Drive A Complete Success."
On five consecutive weekends in July, the Speedway (with the help of volunteers from the LA County Fire Department and from the County Family and Child Services Department) collected over 3,000 new toys from fans and competitors for holiday distribution to some of the less fortunate children of Los Angeles County. Many of the toys were racing-themed and ranged from car models and racing games to driving-suited stuffed animals.
"The Speedway was very honored to be able to take part in this great program, we humbly share this recognition with all the volunteers who were part of the campaign here at the Speedway." said Irwindale VP/COO Robert DeFazio. "We want to especially thank our friends at the L.A. County Fire Department for helping us to bring a little "spark of love" some kids who can really use a little Holiday boost. I know that we all got a whole lot out of it too!"
