Firestone Racing Announces Sponsorship Of Indy Racing League Event at Nazareth Speedway; Firestone Indy 225 Set for April 21
NAZARETH, Pa. (Feb. 20, 2002) - Firestone Racing, International Speedway Corporation and Nazareth Speedway officials announced today that the April 21 Indy Racing League competition at Nazareth Speedway will be called the Firestone Indy 225.
The competition is the fourth event on the 2002 IRL schedule, and will be run on the famous one-mile banked Nazareth Speedway, nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. The asphalt track is essentially a tri-oval, offering drivers three demanding corners and a long back straightaway.
"It's an exciting place to race and we're proud the Firestone brand is title sponsor," said Al Speyer, Executive Director of Motorsports for Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire, LLC. "The Northeast is an important market for Firestone and we are delighted that our many associates, customers and fans will have the opportunity to enjoy the IRL's fierce open-wheel competition at Nazareth in 2002.
"The Firestone Indy 225 is a perfect showcase for our Firehawk race tire technology," Speyer added. "Every driver in the race will explore the ultimate handling limits on Nazareth Speedway's technically demanding track. It will be an awesome show for the fans as they get to see many of the world's top oval track drivers competing tire to tire. The next race after the Firestone Indy 225 is Indianapolis, so all drivers will be giving every effort to carry winning momentum into the Indy 500."
Needless to say, the announcement pleased Nazareth Speedway officials.
"We are excited to welcome Firestone as the title sponsor of our inaugural IRL event," said Craig Rust, Nazareth Speedway President. "It is wonderful to have a quality company like Firestone partner with us in bringing this exciting racing event to race fans in the Northeast. This event will mark the first time the field at Nazareth includes the 2001 IRL champion, the 2001 CART champion and the reigning Indianapolis 500 winner."
The Firestone Indy 225 is the first of two IRL events this season having Firestone as the title sponsor. The other is the Firestone Indy 200, set for July 20 at Nashville Superspeedway.
"Serving as title sponsor for these two events emphasizes the Firestone Racing program's commitment to the Indy Racing League and its exciting style of competition," Speyer said. "We're very proud to be affiliated with Nazareth Speedway, a venue that has produced some very impressive racing. We've competed and won here for the last four years, so we know how to give drivers the tires they need. We're confident the trademark durability, reliability and consistency of the Firehawk racing radials will contribute to some impressive action."
Firestone tires have been used in motorsports since 1909. Throughout the past nine decades, Firestone tires have appeared in and won virtually every top form of racing, including Indy cars, NASCAR, Formula One, sports cars, drag racing, sprint cars, Monster Truck racing and other series. In 2001 Indy Racing League competition, Firestone collected its 52nd win at the Indianapolis 500 - a record of victories greater than all other tire companies competing at Indy combined.
