Open Wheel Magazine has announced an unprecedented, fan-based "Driver of the Year" program for several styles of open wheel racing, beginning with the 2000 season.
The readers of Open Wheel Magazine will decide the 2000 Open Wheel Magazine Driver of the Year. Both the August and September issues of Open Wheel will contain ballots, enabling sprint car fans and participants to vote for the driver they feel is worthy of the title.
In addition to the overall winner, readers of the magazine will pick the most outstanding drivers in five sub-categories (410ci winged sprints, 360ci winged sprints, non-winged sprints, midgets, and Northern Light Indy Racing Series). The results of the "people's choice" of open wheel racing awards will be announced in the February issue of Open Wheel Magazine.
"Open wheel racing fans tend to be very knowledgeable about the sport," said Open Wheel editor Doug Auld. "This is an opportunity for fans to participate and have fun selecting the top drivers in several different styles of racing.
"The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame has sprint car awards each year, and they're voted on by a panel of racing media," said Auld. "They do a great job, and we don't want to infringe on what they do at all.
"The sport has never had a driver poll that's been decided by the fans and participants. Because Open Wheel Magazine has such a highly visible presence in the sport, we are in a very unique position to be able to lead this type of program.
Founded in 1980, Open Wheel Magazine is considered the magazine of record for sprint cars, midgets, and Indy Racing. Open Wheel is published monthly by emap USA.
