FONTANA, CALIFORNIA...Kumho Tires USA will sponsor Dan Vanden Heuvel 'the Flying Dutchman' in Championship Off-Road Racing (CORR) during the 2002 season. Vanden Heuvel, a popular racer who drives a two-wheel drive, 800 horsepower Chevrolet truck in CORR's PRO 2 division, will become the first professional CORR driver to race on Kumho tires.
"We are excited to have a CORR pro team of this caliber using our tires," said Mike Leverington, director of marketing for Kumho Tires USA. "Flying Dutchman Racing has a reputation of extremely high professionalism and brings a new level of competitiveness to the Kumho Tires off-road racing program."
Kumho entered CORR racing in 2001, sponsoring CORR's Rookie of the Year award and running on several single seat off-road buggies in the sportsman class. "2001 has been a good learning experience for us, and we're really looking forward to moving up to the Pro 2 class in 2002," said Leverington. "We are fine tuning the development of our 35x12.50R17LT RoadVenture MT tires. A second pro-spec tire, the 35x14.50R17LT, will also be available during the 2002 season. Running on these high horsepower trucks will demonstrate the world-class technology, reliability and durability that Kumho tires offer."
An off-road racer for a dozen years, Vanden Heuvel is a proven winner and consistent top-five finisher. He twice won S.O.D.A.'s Class 13 off-road championship and finished second three other times. In the past five years, Vanden Heuvel has finished in the top four in CORR's Pro 2 championship, and in 1999 scored two wins and finished as runner-up in the season championship. In 2001, he scored 12 top-five finishes in 16 races, with a season best 2nd place finish at Antiago, Wisconsin, and a pair of second place finishes at the season-ending races in Topeka, KS. Vanden Heuvel finished the 2001 season in fourth place among the 20 drivers in CORR's Pro 2 class.
"Tires are one of the most important factors in off-road racing," said Vanden Heuvel. "You need an aggressive tread pattern with a quality compound to get to the winner's circle. Over the years, I've raced on just about every brand of tire that's been involved in off-road racing. I tested the Kumho tires, and I've never had a tire that stops and turns as well."
In addition to his racing duties, Vanden Heuvel will also help promote Kumho at industry events. He will unveil his new truckwith a Kumho paint scheme--in the Kumho booth at the SEMA show in Las Vegas this fall.
Jamie Devney, Director of Marketing at CORR, said that the CORR community has welcomed Kumho with open arms. "From a sanctioning body perspective, we're glad to have Kumho on board because it offers more choices for our competitors and further strengthens our series," he noted. "CORR's drivers have been impressed with the Kumho tires and also with the sincerity of the Kumho people because they're dedicated to doing this--they're not just coming into CORR for a year to get publicity and then get out. Our other tire suppliers (Goodyear and BF Goodrich) are glad to have the competition because it forces them to make even better tires."
In addition to its CORR racing activities, Kumho is involved in a variety of motorsports activities in the U.S. and beyond. Racers have competed on Kumho tires at several prestigious events, including: the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, the Tecate/SCORE Baja 2000, the Paris-Dakar Rally, Formula 3000 in Korea, the British Rally Championship, and SCCA Racing and Solo II.
Championship Off Road Racing (CORR) is a 16 race series that is rapidly growing in popularity. CORR races are televised on ESPN2 and Speedvision, and the highly competitive Superflo Pro Series averages 37 entries at each event, with another 75 entries in the sportsman divisions.
