Background: Thirty years ago, the Southern California Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers staged a rather impressive panel discussion on "Indy Car Racing". Participants included Dan Gurney, Carroll Shelby, Sam Hanks, Ronnie Bucknum, George Follmer, Rodger Ward, and Dean Batchelor. The topic is every bit as exciting today as it was then. With one eye on the future, and one on our past, a 1999 panel discussion has been organized. The focus of discussion will be the technical and business aspects of CART racing, and why so much of the work is based in Southern California.
