LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 17, 1999) - Championship Auto Racing Teams announced a partnership agreement today with Parke-Davis and Pfizer at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach naming LIPITOR(R) (atorvastatin calcium) as an Official Sponsor.
Parke-Davis and Pfizer, co-marketers of LIPITOR, a treatment for high cholesterol, have joined forces with CART to promote the importance of cardiovascular health among the CART fan base and its sponsors with the LIPITOR Mobile Screening Unit, a unique, state-of-the-art touring health program. The LIPITOR Mobile Screening Unit, a 53-foot trailer, will provide free cholesterol screenings and professional analysis for CART spectators at 13 domestic Champ Car races throughout the 1999 season.
Each year, nearly 500,000 Americans die of coronary heart disease, the No.1 cause of death in the United States. Screening cholesterol levels is an important step to maintaining good cardiovascular health and reducing this risk.
"The LIPITOR Mobile Screening Unit has already educated more than 1,100 CART spectators about their cholesterol levels at the CART opening race at Homestead Motorsports Complex, and will screen thousands more by the end of the racing season," said Andrew Craig, CART Chairman and CEO. "The partnership between LIPITOR and CART may help our spectators lead healthier lives by knowing and understanding their cholesterol levels and their risk of heart disease. Part of CART's mission, along with our partner ISL Marketing which facilitated this relationship, is to pioneer and expand new categories for sponsorship and that's what we have done in developing this relationship with LIPITOR."
In addition to CART, LIPITOR is planning to work with CARA (Championship Auto Racing Auxiliary), individual racing teams and local healthcare providers to achieve awareness of cholesterol as an important cardiovascular risk factor. The LIPITOR CART sponsorship also encompasses a healthcare partnership with CART's 16 other series sponsors and 25 race sponsors by providing screenings at the sponsors' headquarters or other large facilities.
