CONCORD, N.C. -August 11, 2000 - As the phrase goes, "membership has its privileges." Now the phrase is true for even more reasons if you are a member of the Tony Raines' Fan Club. Raines, last year's NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year, will award a member two tickets and the job of "honorary pit crew member" to this year's "Outback Steakhouse 200" at Phoenix International Raceway. The event will be held Saturday, November 4. Individuals and families who have enjoyed the benefits of being part of the fan club will now get the chance of a lifetime - to spend a race weekend with their favorite driver and help him get to victory lane. Activities include lunch with Tony, a VIP tour of the garage area and a chance to "hang out" with Tony before driver introductions. "Most of my fan club members have been supporting me since I came through the ranks of the Truck Series," Raines said. "You can never have enough people in your fan club and the 'Best in the West Contest' is just a special way to say thanks for sticking by me." Raines' will definitely pick up a few more fans if he continues to record strong finishes like his second-place run at South Boston. "We had a great car at South Boston," Raines described. "If we can keep that up, a win is definitely in our sights." Raines is currently 13th in the Busch Series points standings.
Fans can become members of the Tony Raines Fan Club by logging on to www.tonyraines.net and clicking on the fan club link or by calling 704-895-0076. Individual membership is $15 dollars for the year, and $18 dollars for families of up to four people. Fans can also mail their membership request to P.O. Box 249, Terrell, North Carolina, 28682. Only individuals 21 years of age or older are eligible to win the "Best in the West" contest. The winner will be chosen by a random drawing to be held October 1, 2000.
"I selected the Phoenix race for a lot of reasons," explained Raines. "It's only the second time the Busch Series has raced at this track and last year we put on a pretty good show for the fans. Besides, there's plenty to do in the Phoenix area and it would be easy for our winner to make a vacation out of this trip."
