JOHN FERNANDEZ JOINS CHIP GANASSI RACING WITH FELIX SABATES AS MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ITS CONCORD RACING OPERATIONS
CONCORD, N.C. (August 4, 2006) -- Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) announced Friday John Fernandez, former Director of Dodge Motorsports, has accepted a new position with the organization to serve as Managing Director of its Concord racing operation.
"John has been involved in racing for a long time as an engineer with Dodge and as head of its racing programs," said Chip Ganassi. "I am very excited to add someone to the team that has so much experience in a number of different areas. He brings so much to the table."
Fernandez will manage all aspects of the organization's racing operation in North Carolina, including overseeing all four teams, as well as the engine, fabrication and paint shops.
Fernandez' move to CGRFS follows a long career with the DaimlerChrysler Corporation, where he served for 35 years. He joined Chrysler as a co-op student in 1969, and then was hired as a full-time project engineer in 1972. During his time with the automobile manufacturer, he helped manage and oversee the development of numerous Dodge production vehicles, including the Omni, Dakota Truck, Neon and the current generation Viper. He was also the inspiration behind the creation of the Performance Vehicle Operations (PVO) group that designs and develops Dodge's high performance SRT models. In 2002, he was given the lead to head up Dodge Motorsports and all its racing programs.
In addition to his mechanical engineering and management expertise, Fernandez is an experienced racer himself. He competed in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and claimed four championship titles, including three consecutive Central Division championships from 2000 to 2002, in Showroom Stock C, and the 1988 Southern Pacific Division championship in a Shelby Charger in Showroom Stock A.
"Chip and Felix have created a first class environment to work in," said Fernandez. "The new facility, adjacent to the Concord Airport, is spectacular and located for maximum efficiency. They have assembled a talented crew of experienced racers, engineers and mechanics with a top notch management staff and some of the best young drivers in the sport. I see an organization that is poised to make the jump to the next level with all the elements needed for a championship run and I'm thrilled about being able to play a role."
Fernandez earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1972 and MBA in 1977 at the University of Detroit. He is originally from Gloversville, N.Y.
