PHOENIX, Ariz. - Greg Fresquez, a one-time international bicycle road racer, has assumed the title of sales and marketing director for the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. He replaces Chan Martinez, who recently resigned that position after six years to join the staff of Arizona Secretary of State Betsy Bayless as communications director.
Fresquez joined the Bondurant school in 1997 and has worked in promotion, event coordinating, public relations, advertising and marketing positions.
He came to the school shortly after graduation Erom Arizona State University at Tempe with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing fi-om a short stint in sports marketing with Cause & Effect Marketing LLC in Scottsdale, during which he served as operations director of Arizona Bike Week and worked with the firm's commercial sponsors.
A career in sports marketing stemmed from his participation in bicycle road racing, which he began at age 12. By age 14 he was a member of the U.S. Men's ProiAm Tour, competing three or four times a week for up to 80 races a year and spending several training periods at the U. S. Olympic Development Site in Colorado Springs, Colo. He qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials at Spokane, Wash., in 1989 and the next two years competed for the U.S. national bike racing team in Europe as a professional. That included handling all his own sponsorship contracts.
Returning Erom two seasons of racing in Europe, he enrolled at ASU in 1992 and was graduated in 1996.
The Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, founded in Irvine, Calif., by former automobile grand prix driver Bob Bondurant in 1947, moved to Ontario Motor Speedway and Sears Point International Raceway before it located at its current home, at Firebird Raceway in the southeastern suburb of Chandler.
Fresquez lives with his wife Lissa, a bilingual schoolteacher, and their two children, Samantha, 4, and Jack, 2, in Gilbert, Ariz.
The Bondurant school offers a variety of courses for beginning and advanced road racers, plus special instruction for teenagers in defensive driving, chauffeurs in survival tactics against potential kidnapers and special training for law enforcement officers. The more than 50,000 graduates include such driving champions as Richard Petty, Dale Eamhardt, Stirling Moss, Dan Gurney, Rick Mears, Teny Labonte and Michael Andretti. Bondurant has also instructed such celebrities as Paul Newman, James Gamer, Crystal Barnard, Tim Allen, Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman, among others. 04060 1
