Round Eight of the SUPERFUND Euro 3000 Championship takes place on Sunday 19th September at the Circuit Zolder in Belgium.
The 3.977 km track was built in 1963 and has played host to many Formula One Grand Prix, as well as the European Historic Grand Prix, the Truck Super Prix and other national competitions. The Circuit Zolder last featured on the SUPERFUND Euro 3000 calendar in 2001.
With a combination of fast and slow chicanes, the circuit at Zolder proves a challenge for drivers especially in wet weather. The Sacrements Hill is the only hill on the track and is a steep short rise in altitude dropping quickly down to the famous Villeneuve chicane which was named in honour of the late Gilles Villeneuve in 1984. There are several sections where it is possible to overtake notably the high-speed entrance into the Jacky Ickx chicane and the first left hand corner of Eerste Linkse.
Fabrizio Del Monte currently leads the Championship with 42 points ahead of main rival Nicky Pastorelli of Draco Junior Team with 32 points. John Village Automotive driver Jonny Reid and Bernard Auinger of the Euronova team are both tied in third place with 21 points apiece. ADM Motorsport driver Norbert Siedler follows closely behind with 17 points while fellow Austrian, Mathias Lauda lies in tenth place with six points.
With three races left in the series and a maximum score of thirty points at stake, all drivers will be looking to close the gap to championship leader Del Monte as they line up on the grid in Zolder.
Fabrizio Del Monte, GP Racing:
"I've never been to Zolder but I have been studying the track on paper with my engineers and I feel well-prepared for the weekend ahead. We will start with the same car we had in Dijon as we haven't made any significant changes on the car yet. My main aim this weekend is to stay ahead of Pastorelli and go for the win."
Nicky Pastorelli, Draco Junior Team:
"This race will be very important for the Championship. I'm ten points behind Fabrizio so I need a victory in Zolder to pick up valuable championship points. As we are not far from the Dutch border, this is the closest I will get this season to a home race and I'm really looking forward to racing in front of my fans."
Jonny Reid, John Village Automotive:
"We had such a great result in Dijon I'm hoping we can keep the momentum going in Zolder. This will be the first time for me at the circuit and I've heard the first section is pretty quick with some complex turns at the end. I'm really looking forward to getting out there and hopefully picking up some more championship points. There's a great hype in the JVA camp at the moment so we want to keep it rolling!"
Bernhard Auinger, Euronova:
"I know the circuit in Zolder quite well as I raced there in Formula Koenig and also tested at the track in Formula 3. It's got some interesting quick chicanes as well as a few slow chicanes and some new corners after the start finish straight so I'm looking forward to seeing what these are like. There are also possibilities for overtaking so it should be an exciting race. I'm really keen to repeat my performance in Spa but I know we will have a fight on our hands to get to the front of the field."
