McLaren driver Nathan Morcom won today’s second Australian GT Championship race at Albert Park, beating Dane Benny Simonsen on pit-stop time.
In a weather-affected race, it was actually Ferrari driver Simonsen who crossed the line first in the brand new 488 GT3.
But once times were corrected, it was Morcom – who finished 0.7s behind Simonsen on the road – who was awarded first place.
The turning point for Simonsen was a late slip-up at the second last corner, which happened when the rain returned with five minutes to go. His comfortable lead all but vanished, meaning he was not just overhauled by Morcom on corrected time, but demoted to third behind Klark Quinn’s McLaren.
Elliot Barbour and Grant Denyer made it four McLarens in the Top 5, with Geoff Emery the best Audi in P6.
Aaron Tebb was seventh in the Waltec Porsche, with Andrew Miedecke eighth in his family team’s brand new Aston Martin.
Clipsal race winner Roger Lago was ninth in his Lamborghini, Tony Quinn rounding out the Top 10 in his Aston.
