Houston, Texas (September 29, 2000) -- The World Speed Motorsports team qualified today in the first provisional session for round twelve of the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship series in Houston, Texas, September 29 -- October 1, part of the Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston CART FedEx Championship weekend. Unfortunately, both Akihiro Asai and Andy Lally retired early from the qualifying session due to contact with the wall. Fifteen minutes into the session Asai, who is running on the Houston street circuit for the first time, hit the wall coming out of Turn four. "I just went too deep into Turn four and went straight into the tire wall. The car felt great, but I just went into the turn too hard. The track is really bumpy and there is no time to think about the next turn and then it's there. Every turn looks the same. We'll do much better tomorrow but, I feel more comfortable with the track now," said Asai.

Lally, who last ran with the World Speed team at Road America, is making his second Atlantic appearance this weekend. With just five minutes left in the session, Lally hit the wall and broke the suspension component, leaving him with the 11th fastest time in the session. "I was coming on to the back straightaway and I hit the right rear wheel on the back wall. I broke the suspension component on the right rear side," said Lally, who ran as high as 8th in the practice session this morning. "You really have to watch out for potential disasters on this track. I'm still learning the car after Road America, but I'm feeling more and more comfortable every time I get in the car." Tomorrow's CART Toyota Atlantic activities begin with Atlantic practice at 8:15 a.m., followed by the second qualifying session at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, October 1 commences with 15 - minute warm-up session at 8:00 a.m. before the start of the 43 -- lap race at 9:40 a.m. All times are Central. k
