GURNEY IS THIRD FASTEST IN PRACTICE AT WATKINS GLEN

(WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., June 26, 1998) – Team Green Academy Class of ‘97/’98 grad Alex Gurney turned the third fastest lap of the day in practice for Sunday’s Barber Dodge Pro Series race at Watkins Glen International.

Gurney, of Newport Beach, Calif., turned a lap of 1:16.499 seconds, for an average speed of 115.296 mph around the 2.45-mile road course. The fastest lap of the day was 1:16.470 seconds (115.339 mph) set by Italian Rino Mastronardi. Giovanni Anapoli, also of Italy, set the day’s second fastest lap at 1:16.493 seconds (115.305 mph).

Qualifying for the fourth round of the Barber Dodge Pro Series will take place in two sessions tomorrow (Saturday), with the 40-minute race scheduled for Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. The first ESPN2 broadcast is slated for Sunday, July 12, at 11:00 a.m. Eastern.

ALEX GURNEY, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD-DODGE: “We had a great setup on the car right off the truck. I was comfortable immediately. This track requires a smooth driving style, which I’ve been told I have. You just sort of ease the car in, then turn. With the car setup the way it is, it is easy to attack and it rewards aggressiveness.”
