TEAM KOOL GREEN TABS ALEX GURNEY FOR KOOL/TOYOTA ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP
INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 15, 1999) - Team KOOL Green announced today that it will enter a car for Alex Gurney in the 1999 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship as part of the team's ongoing driver development program. Gurney, son of All American Racers (AAR) team owner Dan Gurney, will drive a Swift 008.a/Toyota 4A-GE in the series which consists of 12 events in the United States and Canada. Sponsorship will be provided by KOOL with additional support from AAR.
A resident of Newport Beach, Calif., Gurney, 24, drove for Team KOOL Green in the 1998 Barber Dodge Pro Series. He finished 10th in the series championship in a season highlighted by four top-10 finishes, including two top-fives and the first pole of his professional career at Homestead.
"The opportunity to compete in the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship is something I’ve always dreamed about,” said Gurney. “The fact that I’ll be doing it with Team KOOL Green makes it all the more exciting. Working with them last year was invaluable to my development as a racing driver and I hope to make similar progress this year in Atlantics.”
Team KOOL Green general manager Kim Green will assume overall responsibility for the program, while Atlantic veteran Bill Fickling will be team manager for Gurney's Team KOOL Green entry. An extensive test program is currently underway in preparation for Gurney’s KOOL/Toyota Atlantic debut in the season-opener at Long Beach on April 17.
"Team KOOL Green has been involved with Alex's career for a couple of seasons now, first as interested observers and, last year, through our driver development program," said Green. "From the very first we were impressed with his talent, commitment and character. We think he has a very bright future in racing, and we're looking forward to working with him in this year's KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship."
This is Gurney's second season as a professional racing driver. Prior to competing in the Barber Dodge Pro Series, he raced in the 1997 Skip Barber Formula Dodge Midwestern Series, winning 10 of 14 races and capturing Rookie of the Year honors. Alex attended the University of Colorado, earning a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1997.
Today’s announcement completes the 1999 Team KOOL Green driver lineup of Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy in Champ Cars, Jonny Kane in Indy Lights and Gurney in Atlantics.
