Lynx Racing in the CART Toyota Atlantic and Barber Dodge Pro Series support races at the Motorola 220 at Road America, August 18 - 20
Lynx Racing drivers David Rutledge and Mike Conte both had enlightening experiences in the famed 'Canada Corner' during the CART Toyota Atlantic support race at Road America today, but it worked out in vastly different ways for the two drivers. In the CART Toyota Atlantic race, Rutledge, 21, of Vancouver BC, started from fourth place on the grid - outside the second row - and moved into second before the first turn of the first lap. He took the lead on lap two and held it for several laps until, during the re-start after a yellow flag, he had contact with another car and spun off into the gravel trap at Canada Corner. He was unable to continue and finished 18th. The race was won by series points leader and former Lynx driver Buddy Rice, now competing for the DSTP Motorsports team. "Ultimately it was my fault because I got into the corner too hot, the car ahead of me took the air off my front wing and I couldn't get my car to stop or turn and I just plowed into him," says Rutledge, driver of the #19 Lynx Racing Swift 008.a. "It's a shame because we had a car capable of winning the race, just as we did in the last race at Trois Rivieres. The team has really come together since the start of the season and they're giving me very good cars for the races, but we need to work on breaking this run of bad luck. The upcoming event at Laguna Seca in three weeks is the team's 'home' race so we'll do whatever it takes to get past this and put in a good performance in front of the home town crowd." Mike Conte, after a difficult weekend in the previous event at Trois Rivieres came back to finish 7th, the best result of his season so far. "The complexion of the race changed for me after an incident in Canada Corner," says Conte, who drives the #17 Lynx Racing / White-Black Design Swift 008.a. "I go punted off in a big way by the car behind me, but I managed to keep the car moving when I hit the gravel and got it back on course. It handled differently in the right and left hand turns after that, and there was a bit of a vibration, but I felt like it was still good enough to continue, and I was able to move back up through the field to score my best finish of the season. This was a real turnaround for me from the last race, and a useful lesson in the power of perseverance. I feel like this was a breakthrough for me, and I'm expecting better finishes in the remaining races of the season." In the Barber Dodge Pro Series Race, Lynx driver Sara Senske battled an ill-handling car and a failing motor to qualify 24th, and in the race ran laps more than a full second faster than her qualifying time to finish 20th in her #19 Lynx Racing Reynard 98E. The event was won by Nilton Rossoni. "More important to me than the finishing position was that I ran faster in the race than I did in qualifying, and that I felt like I really got back into the rhythm of driving," says Senske, 22, of Kennewick, Washington. "This is my first event back from four weeks off due to a broken hand I suffered in testing at Sebring, and in a series this competitive, a lot of rust can accumulate on your reflexes in that time. This event got rid of all that, and I'm ready to go for it 110% in the next event on the schedule."
