Dalziel fastest at Firebird
Ryan Dalziel blazed a trail through two days of pre-season Toyota Atlantic testing at the Firebird International Raceway in Arizona on Tuesday (9th) and Wednesday (10th). The 2003 Championship runner-up, returning to action with Sierra Sierra Enterprises, topped the unofficial time sheets with a lap time of 51.8s yesterday -- the fastest time recorded over the two day test. Dalziel's pace, four-tenths faster than the second quickest time yesterday, recorded by his new team-mate Andrew Ranger, is a further boost to the 21-year-old's title charge ahead of the opening race of the season, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, in California on Sunday 18th April.
Returning to action behind the wheel of his Swift Toyota Atlantic charger on Tuesday, Ryan was once again a front-runner, finishing second fastest before going on to blitz the timesheets yesterday with the fastest lap round Firebird's 1.2-mile East Circuit.
Reflecting on his efforts in Arizona Dalziel commented: "It went really well. I'm glad to be back for another year. We've been working on some stuff for the past couple of days, so we pretty much had a goal to go out and put a time down this morning while the track was good and we put down a pretty good lap. We spent the rest of the day, from 10 o'clock onwards, just trying some development work. We learned a fair amount of stuff, so we're pretty confident going into Long Beach that we're going to have a good car this year."
Ryan kicked off the week attending the 'Season Premiere' media event at Long Beach where he headlined this year's line-up of competitors and mingled with members of the media celebrating the 31st year of the Toyota Atlantic Championship. The Scot then flew to Firebird for testing with today (Thursday 11th) marking a day off for the title-hopeful before resuming testing duties tomorrow and Saturday, this time on Firebird's West Circuit.
