ELKHART LAKE, WI., August 18, 2000 -- Rookie Martin Basso (Michael Shank Racing / 3B Engine Valve/ Swift 008.a) captured the provisional pole for Sunday's Round 9 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship race at Road America, tearing nearly a second off of Alex Tagliani's 1999 record of 2:03.553. Basso posted a 2:02.734 on the 4.048 mile road course. Bob Perona (Cobb Racing / Media One / Swift 008.a) was second, while Andrew Bordin (PPI Motorsports / WorldCom / Team Player's / Swift 008.a) was third quickest.
"This is my first time here, so I'm really happy. The team did a good job testing last week at Gingerman and I think it helped us with a couple of things. On my fast lap I was able to use the draft in a couple of different places, which made a big difference. The balance of the car is very good, so it should be pretty good for the race. It would be nice to get my first pole here at Road America, but there are a lot of other drivers who will be trying to take it away from me tomorrow."
Perona, whose teammate at Cobb Racing, Frenchman Frederic Gosparini qualified fourth, attributes the team's superb performance to the addition of a second car.
"Since we added the second car it's been much easier to develop the cars. For the past two seasons I've been essentially alone to develop, but with Frederic here we are able to get a lot more done. We've tried a lot of different things, I've driven his car, he's driven mine and we are able to see what we like and don't like. In this session, I decided to go the entire time without a stop to get the car down on fuel. The car was pretty good in practice, but we made some changes and threw on some new tires. The track was very different than it was this morning, and it was really good toward the beginning of the session but toward the end, it got a little slippery. I got my best time without a draft, so I think I could of probably got a little bit more but I'm pretty happy with my time now."
Bordin, who is the defending champion at Road America, was third quickest.
"I basically used this session to set my car up because the track was very different that this morning. I took some laps to think aobut it and then came in and made a call and I was able to turn a 3.6 (2:03.660) but it is still off. I didn't draft at all so I really don't know how my car will work in the draft."
The second qualifying session for Sunday's Round 9 Atlantic race, will be held on Saturday, at 12:55 p.m. Sunday's 17 lap race is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
